It could be for aesthetic or practical reasons, like using keys with a different profile or for a seasonal clean, but we all need to remove the keycaps of our keyboards at some point.
Let's find the best way and some tips for replacing them.
All Dygma keyboards use mechanical switches with standard MX stem keycaps and a few low-profile keycaps in the thumb cluster. Also, all our models ship with a keycap/switch puller, which is the tool we'll need for this operation.
The best way to proceed is the following:
- Disconnect the keyboard and turn off the halves if it's wireless.
- Hold the keyboard with one hand and remove the keycaps using the keycap puller. Exert vertical and constant force to prevent damage to the stems or the switches.
- Leave the keys in the same order on the desk to facilitate the reassembly afterward.
- Reinstall the keycaps or install the new set. Pay attention to the keys with stabilizers and make sure they are inserted in the keycap.
Remember that the puller can extend to catch large keycaps, like the Shift. Don't fear stretching it; it won't affect the puller's performance for future removals.
